Dear WIGOS community,

We are pleased to announce that version 1.3 of the WDQMS webtool was launched today, Thursday 26 November 2020.

In this version, a new module for the monitoring of climate observing networks was implemented, in addition to the near-real-time NWP monitoring module. This module provides monitoring results of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) networks based on data collected from the GCOS monitoring centres. The new module includes two monitoring components, for upper-air and for surface observations. The upper-air component, based on the GCOS Upper-Air Network (GUAN) is available from this version 1.3, whereas the land surface component, based on GCOS Surface Network (GSN), is planned to be available in release 1.3.1.

The upper-air component has two monitoring categories, data availability and data quality. The availability category tracks the number of days per month for which upper-air reports were available from GUAN stations. The quality category monitors the quality of the observations in terms of the difference between observation and model output. The upper-air component is currently based on BUFR reports only.

This new release also allows for the display of surface observations monitoring results provided by stations that are reporting in BUFR, using only the WIGOS Station Identifier, i.e. stations that do not have a traditional 5-digit WMO ID.

best regards,
the WDQMS team
