Dear National Focal Points for WIGOS,
CC: National Focal Points for OSCAR/Surface

Thank you for your contributions to preparing for the initial GBON composition to be approved by the World Meteorological Congress at its nineteenth session (Cg-19) in 2023 and to undertake the actions per circular letter to Members No. 18876/2022/I/WIGOS/ONM/GBON dated 15 August 2022.

We would like to inform you that following the Task Team on GBON Implementation’s decision at its ninth meeting, the deadline (hard deadline) for designating GBON stations has been extended to 31 January 2023. The Task Team also invited Members, through their NFPs for WIGOS and NFPs for OSCAR/Surface to kindly undertake the following actions:

  • As a first level priority, to address the remaining gaps and designate more stations, to register all reporting stations in OSCAR/Surface, and to rehabilitate or upgrade existing stations where appropriate; and
  • As a second level priority to improve the spatial distribution of their GBON networks where possible.
References and guidelines are available on the WMO Community Platform, https://community.wmo.int/activity-areas/wigos/gbon/implementation-global-basic-observing-network-gbon

We recall that the GBON designation status of the proposed stations can be seen on the GBON webtool (no editing with this tool, it only reflects all stations assigned to GBON in "pending approval" mode in OSCAR/Surface).

Should you have any questions or require further clarification, please post your questions in the Discussion Forum on the WIGOS Learning Portal, https://etrp.wmo.int/course/view.php?id=146 or via email to Etienne Charpentier, email address: echarpentier@wmo.int .

Thank you, kind regards,

The GBON Secretariat
