Hello!

Is it possible to delete a non-primary WIGOS-ID in OSCAR?

We removed the WIGOS_ID 0-40-9999-9999 with the delete button, but after saving we received an error message.
Backround Information: Several users built new WIGOD_IDs without approval of the NFP.  We want to regain a certain structure and have to remove or replace those WIGOS_IDs.

best regards

Dear Silke,
Thank you for your question. Please be aware that you need to submit a request to OSCAR/Surface, e.g. via the "Feedback for" for such removal.
Regarding the background/rationale of this request, it would be good to hear opinions from other national focal points and experts what are their views, please.
Kind regards,
Luis

In Australia, we are assigning the third group to an organisation so they can manage their own subset of numbers as required. So the third group is managed by the NFP, and the fourth group can use an organisation's own numbering convention. This provides a level of autonomy to other organisations.
0-36-9-XXXXX (9 refers to Bureau of Meteorology stations, where XXXX is usually the former WMO number.
0-36-20-XXXXXX (20 refers to Port Authority of NSW stations)

In Austria the third group of the WIGOS_ID (issue number) is also managed by our NFP as a local attribute, but we cannot prevent insitutions from using none approved issue numbers. We are missing a kind of regulation. Sometimes user register stations without information to the NFP.

In the UK we have done something similar. For the 3rd group of the WIGOS ID, 0 is for the UK Met Office, 300 The Science and Technology Facilities Council, 301 The University of Manchester, 302 The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and 303 The British Antarctic Survey. We can then continue the numbering sequence for any further requests.

Since every regular user may use any arbitrary issue number for a new stations WIGOS ID, the question arises:

Are you able to prevent a user, e.g. from university (your issue number 301) from adding a new station with a (wrong) WIGOS ID issue number 303? Your internal regulations would assign this station to the British Antarctic Survey…

Good morning Martin

The UK Met Office are responsible for the issuing of WIGOS IDs to all UK sites, British Overseas Territories and British Crown Dependencies, together with any 3rd party Organisations that the UK has reponsibility for, We have a strict process in place, to ensure that any requests for them are routed to the Observations Operations Team, who can then issue them in a controlled manner, ensuring there is no duplication.

Many thanks

Stuart
