Dear CALMeters

Thank you for participating in Day 1.

In the Opening Session, Wilfried Jacobs welcomed us all on behalf of the host institution of DWD. Paul Bugeac opened the CALMet XV, congratulated for 30 years CALMet of being a community, and shared a story about the founder of the community in 1993. Wilfried and Roro then expressed what the CALMet Community meant to them personally and some memorable pictures of 30 years of CALMet were shared. Heleen concluded the session by sharing practical tips for attending the conference.

Then Erin Martin guided discussion on collaboration in her workshop on "EOTEC DevNet network analysis: insights on the global capacity building landscape". After sharing a few of the visualizations, presenters ask participants to 1) analyze the gaps, 2) offer examples (based on their experience) of success factors and challenges to collaboration with other partners, and 3) suggest ideas for improving the connections, especially through virtual collaboration. The conversation led to the mapping of different collaboration networks, finding new and unknown networks, the challenges of collaboration, possible platforms to use for discussion within communities, and some recommendations from experiences.

At 12.00 UTC, Wilfried Jacobs hosted the session about Fostering collaboration with Communities. We saw more examples of how Communities of Practices could be run, some notes were taken about challenges and some possible solutions were proposed. The importance of sponsorships and strong leadership were highlighted as the key successful factors in fostering collaboration, no matter how informal or shapeless the community itself. It is also essential to keep everyone informed, let the positive vibes stay along the way, keeping the balance between the dynamics of pushing people more and pushing them less.

At 22.00 UTC, the workshop Meteorological Simulator for Training led by Vesa Nietosvaara and Natasha Strelec Mahovic took us in a show and tell of their new EUMETSAT simulator engine being made available to the community. During that session, we learned how we can build our own simulator, based on our own data, for our own training event using this tool.

Such a great Day-1 and this interesting discussion, that has started during these sessions, will continue, in the asynchronous forums in the Group pages until the end of the week. In case you didn’t manage to join these sessions and you are still interested in seeing what happens, then the recordings of these sessions will be available on the "Information for Synchronous Sessions & the Recordings of the Events that happened in this Group" page in the CALMet XV Conference site. The recordings of the first two sessions you will find on the page of Group 3. The simulator session will come on the page of Group 2.
