Dear CALMeters,

Welcome to the first day of CALMet 2023, hosted by the German Weather Service!

We are happy to have you this year, to explore the most recent trends, practices, and methods influencing the field of meteorological training and professional development. Despite being virtual, this conference will still be highly interactive and full of opportunities for interaction.

Further, please be informed that the discussion starting today. In order to accommodate the global participants in various time zones, there will be live plenary sessions as well as several asynchronous.

Keep in mind that as this conference focused on “flipped-learning”, you will benefit most from having read or viewed the contributed materials beforehand. There will be more than just presentations at this conference. You play an important and pivotal role in the event!

Just a last reminder, the home site for the event is the etrp.wmo.int Moodle site. The direct link is https://etrp.wmo.int/course/view.php?id=321. (You have been sent registration instructions previously, so please seek these out if necessary.) This site will provide access to both live sessions and resources for your enjoyment and learning at times convenient for you. Be sure to visit the first section first: Attending CALMet XV. It provides some essential information to guide your participation.

 

First Day Highlights

Four Live Sessions will be conducted on this first day.

1.     05:00 UTC: The short opening session  will include a welcome by the CALMet Co-Chairs and by Dr Paul Bugeac, Coordinator of Learning and Development of the WMO Education and Training Office.

2.     05:45 UTC: A workshop EOTEC DevNet Network Analysis: Insights on the Global Capacity Building Landscape.” See the Group 3 section for the resources in advance of that time.

3.     12:00 UTC: A packed session of 9 contributors in “Fostering collaboration with communities.” will highlight challenges, and opportunities as well as lessons learned and best practices in the collaboration. Wilfried Jacobs from DWD will chair the session. See the Group 3 section: Fostering Collaboration with Community for the accompanying resources.

4.     22.00 UTC: This 1-hour workshop will discuss the topic of “Meteorological Simulator for Training”. Vesa Nietosvaara & Natasa Strelec Mahovic will lead the workshop. The supporting resources can be found in Group 2.

Live sessions will be hosted in Zoom, Webex, or Teams. The links to these sessions you will find in the conference environment on the Information for Synchronous Sessions page for each Thematic Group or in the CALMet Conference Schedule. The recordings, for participants who were unable to attend the live session, will be added to the Thematic Group Pages as soon as they are available. The discussion forum will be accessible throughout the week.

CALMet XV is marked 30 years of CALMet. We walked a long road, had wonderful experiences, experienced an exciting journey, and more to come.  Have a great 1st day and a great week ahead. Enjoy your days!
