Ross Bunn - NWP Fundamentals : Improving the Articulate Storyline on-screen drawing activity.

Resource: Ross Bunn - Online content delivery with Articulate 360 - Numerical Model Fundamentals

Activity location: Articulate 360 Course "Numerical Model Fundamentals - Training" --> Lesson: Grid spacing vs Resolution --> first quarter of lesson content.

I created this activity in Articulate Storyline, using an image I created as a background for users to draw onto. I used an existing online drawing tool, which is not ideal, as the functionality of my activity depends on the availability of this online drawing tool.

In addition, I the activity requires users erase white space first to reveal the background image to be drawn on. Again this is not ideal functionality for the activity.

Do you have any experience with Articulate Storyline and how I can improve the functionality of this activity?

Do you know of any other Storyline drawing activities which allow drawing onto any image?

Hi, I get this message when I open the link: "This site is not available currently" (and also when I open other links in other sections leading to the platform learn.bom.gov.au)

Hi Ross, this is a problem we have been wrestling with at COMET for a little while now and I'm sad to say we haven't come up with a good solution. COMET has a drawing tool for our in-house set of tools (e.g. https://www.meted.ucar.edu/hydro/HEFS/navmenu.php?tab=1&page=3-3-0&type=flash) but we haven't been able to replicate this in our lessons built with Storyline.

To help you improve the functionality of this, it would be helpful to know how you built your version? Would you mind sharing the story file (or a sample of it)?

absolutely I can share the activity. The functionality in storyline is as follows:
- Slide has the background image I want users to draw onto
- over the top of this image, I have placed a web with the address of the online drawing tool (https://caboodle-tech.github.io/whiteboard/index.html). Load automatically is checked, and displays within the slide.

The activity functionality depends on the functionality of the online drawing tool which is far from ideal. I was unable to get the javascript from the drawing tool github site to work in storyline, nor was I able to remove the drawing tool background white space. Running and editing the java script is beyond my skillset tbh.

Any help here with running the java script (insead of using a web object ),  and removing the which space (so users don't have erase the white space to uncover the background image before drawing) - that would be much appreciated.

Hi Ross
Like James, I do not know of anything like that in Storyline and I also use the COMET drawing tool. But I would be more than happy if something similar could be done directly within Articulate. Maybe it's worth asking the Articulate Support Team?!
Here's an example of how I used the drawing interaction in an online module: https://360.articulate.com/review/content/1b885b24-892f-497e-8d02-b9edb6a86c0b/review

Hi Ross,

Here is an example of how we merged Storyline with the COMET drawing tool: https://www.meted.ucar.edu/satmet/sat_analysis2/

Perhaps that can spark some more ideas.

Cheers,
Tsvet

Ross,
You can use the link in the previous posts. Once you get past the first exercise, you will come across the drawing activity. It launches a new tab but it is also possible to embed it inside Storyline. The embed strategy works but it requires some scrolling. Let me know if you see any ways to improve it.

Thanks,
Tsvet

Hi Tsvet - I have tried the COMET drawing activity and I really like it's functionality - especially showing the original drawing with the correct drawing on the background image. How would the embed in Storyline work? Are there online training resources on how to embed a web page object into a storyline activity?

Hi Ross
So embedding it into storyline is not too hard, you can simply add it as a webobject (https://community.articulate.com/articles/storyline-360-adding-web-objects) but instead of inserting the link of a website you click on the folder icon next to the address field and choose the location where you have the file on your screen.

However, the more complex thing is to create the activity itself, here I guess Tsvet can help you and tell you, if COMET can provide you with the activity itself.

Great Fabienne - thankyou for your comment. Yes I was thinking about that - I would need a copy of the COMET activity to embed in the storyline object. I'll ask my training managers if my agency still has an agreement with COMET to share resources.

Hi Tsvet, Is it possible for me to receive a copy of the COMET drawing tool resource to embed into Storyline?

Hi Ross,

Yes, you can download the zipped package from this link. We ask that those who use it provide credit to the COMET Program. You will need to modify the index.htm file with an HTML editor.

Cheers,
Tsvet
