Call for Proposals: New 2024 Edition of WMO Global Campus Innovations

by Patrick Parrish -
Number of replies: 18

The goal of this session and this forum is to encourage you to propose a contribution to the 2024 edition of the WMO Global Campus Innovations.

Please read the attached Call for Proposals for details on the types of contributions that would make fitting chapters for the publication.

Then use this forum to either (1) ask questions about the publication that will help you decide whether and how to contribute or (2) share an idea for a proposed contribution. Sharing ideas for potential contributions will hopefully generate discussion about innovations and how others can best learn from your experiences, or even to find collaborators involved in similar innovations in their own institutions.

Included in the Call are the following guides your thinking:

Currently education and training professionals are confronted by many questions about the directions in which education and training will evolve:

  • How has the subsidence, but not complete eradication, of the Covid pandemic altered our instructional methods and logistics? Has there been a return to past norms with new enthusiasm, or do we now take advantage of good practices learned from the innovations force upon us to help in the post Covid era?
  • How has the rapidly progressing impacts of climate change and accompanying severe weather changed job performance needs, and therefore education and training needs?
  • How is the evolution of operational forecast systems, like enhanced NWP and improved and more cost-effective observations instruments, changing the role of forecasters and the skill requirements of new staff to take on these roles?
  • How are educators and trainers reacting to the opportunities or perceived threats from the unexpected successes in large language models and other Artificial Intelligence? Given its growing successes in mining and presenting useful information and intelligently constructing responses and explanations, what are its impacts to teaching, content development, learning interactions and student evaluation methods? How might the role of teachers and trainers be altered in positive ways?
  • What will be the impacts of AI on job performance requirements and the education and training to prepare the workforce for this new environment?
  • How has the demand for increasingly sophisticated teleconferencing systems changed the capabilities for synchronous distance learning and expanding the reach of education and training?
  • How have other advances in technology, both learning and performance technologies, altered the learning needs and opportunities of students and new staff members?
  • How can we bridge the increasing gaps in education and training opportunities among the nations of the world to develop sufficient professionals to meet growing needs?
We look forward to your forum posts!

Let's have a "Show of Hands": New 2024 Edition of WMO Global Campus Innovations

by Patrick Parrish -
Dear CALMeters,

It has been a joy to read about all your adventures and challenges in training. While I have not been participating in workshops due to my own marathon—taking care of an 11-week-old child—I do read the forums and was around for the Group 3 Introductions and discussion. Life never stops giving us things to accomplish and new things to learn. We have to choose those things most urgent and motivating for us, and that is plenty for any person to do.

Happily, this group continues to get together to present and write about their own accomplishments, so that our own experience can be expanded. I see many innovations being implemented that did not exist just a few years ago. And I see many newly budding innovations on their way. The future is exciting to ponder.

I want to encourage all of you to consider creating a short, but lasting document about your efforts to innovate in addressing the challenges of educating and training for the environmental prediction professionals. This could be one of innovations you discussed this week, or another one being introduced by your organization. Please consider contributing to the WMO Global Campus Innovations, 2024 Edition. It’s another great way to be a part of this community.

A Show of Hands: If you are interested in taking part, it would be great see a “show of hands” from you. Just send a short response to this post to say something like, “I’m in!” or “I’m thinking seriously about doing this,” or “I will discuss this possibility with my colleagues and get back to you.” Many of you are working on similar challenges. You might also consider teaming up to collaborate on writing a chapter for the publication. Letting us all know you are interested could help others decide who are not yet sure.

You’d be surprised how short 2000-3000 words is when you are writing about something you are passionate about. And an editor or editors will be there to help you get it into final shape. As mentioned in the first post, all very short 500-word-maximum proposals should go to the WMO ETR Office at tra@wmo.int. Don’t wait until the end-of-February deadline. Submit it as soon as you are ready. See the Call for Proposals for more details.

Let's have a "Show of Hands": New 2024 Edition of WMO Global Campus Innovations

by Vesa Nietosvaara -
Dear Patrick, all,

We will at EUMETSAT training team discuss this in December and surely submit later one or more proposals.
The previous Innovations 2020 Edition was such a success, and a good reference still for many meteorological training related subjects.

Dear Patrick,
the previous experience was very successful, and I'm still reading parts of it now and then. It helps a lot in the discussion of new training experiences. I already proposed my colleagues to contribute to the new edition and discussion is under way.
Keep in touch

Hi Marina,

Thanks for promoting the idea at IBE. I am sure you have many great things to contribute. Your contribution to the 2020 edition was excellent.

I can imagine that it is nice to take a look now and again. It's really useful to have a volume of cases of teaching innovations all focused on the work of WMO Members rather than disciplines that might be harder to relate to!

It's great to see this new iteration of the Innovations publication being planned. We are actively considering which aspects of our work might make interesting and useful papers and fully intend to submit some proposals.

(Roro take note): SMN Contribution to WMO Global Campus Innovations 2024

by Patrick Parrish -

Hi Romina,

It will be great to have SMN involved once again. Congratulations on your role in the RTC!

In the 2020 Edition, there was a very good case about collaborative learning (Roro might want to take note) provided by SMN for improving regional Disaster Risk Reduction processes. This was Chapter 1, Volume III:  Developing and implementing a virtual workshop: Meteorology in the framework of disaster risk reduction – Interaction between National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and decision-makers--by Daniela D'Amen and Matias Menalled.

This approach, with national teams working together on improving their local DRR processes, was a source of inspiration for the design of the currently offered Marine Services Course, in which national teams collaboratively develop a Service Delivery Context Analysis during the online phase of the course. This will be offered for the 5th time next year by BMKG Indonesia.

Hi Emmanuel,

It will be great to have the RTC Nigeria involved. For the 2020 Edition, Dr. Olukayode Oladipo of Nigeria was a contributing editor.

That is quite interesting!

Could you please share a link to where I can have access to the document?

I would be glad if that were possible.

Thanks in anticipation.

Dear Emmanuel,

If you are asking for the Call for Proposals, it was in the opening post to this discussion thread. I paste it here again:

"Please read the attached Call for Proposals for details on the types of contributions that would make fitting chapters for the publication. "

If you are looking for Global Campus Innovations 2020 Edition, it is here: https://library.wmo.int/records/item/35791-global-campus-innovations?offset=4

Links to all volumes are listed at the bottom of that page.

I'd be keen for BMTC to be involved. We really are looking at flipping the classroom, at more integrated practical exercises that break down the subject boundaries. It is an exciting time for us.

Thanks Mick,

Its an exciting time for all of us! Even those of us who only have a home office.

Its is great to hear that BMTC will share some of its great work. I met some of your great staff when I visted almost 7 years ago. A creative group.

Re: Let's have a "Show of Hands": New 2024 Edition of WMO Global Campus Innovations

by Patrick Parrish -

Dear Asri,

I have read your interesting posts about your work to implement impact-based forecasting in your region of BMKG.

It would make a very interesting and valuable chapter in WMO Global Campus Innovations for others to read about your challenges, and particularly the things you found useful to overcome them. This includes advice you received from others (like CALMet participants) and from WMO resources, or any other training and resources. Describing what was most difficult and how you incrementally resolved the difficulties would be a great story to tell.

If you will be working on this with a goal to implement it at least a pilot system by May or June, it would be perfect timing. Just collect good notes as you go and gather information from your stakeholders about the process. Many WMO Members could benefit.
