The International Advanced School in Agricultural Meteorology: from an initial bet to a consolidated initiative (Marina Baldi - CNR IBE Italy)

The WMO Regional Training Center in Italy

Who we are: The Institute of BioEconomy of the National Research Council (CNR-IBE) runs the WMO Regional Training Centre Italy of the World Meteorological Organization, since mid-nineties. The RTC is part of the Global Network of the RTCs, established in 1958, on which the WMO Education and Training Programme framework is based. The CNR-IBE experience in planning education and training started from the analysis of users needs of the African National Meteorological Services and Technical Organizations involved in “The Early Warning and Agricultural Production Forecast Project” (AP3A Project) financed by the Italian Cooperation through WMO. In particular, the main purpose of RTC Training Programme was to develop capacity building in the target Countries, in order to mitigate the effects of extreme events such as drought, desertification and famine especially in semi-arid regions of North, West and East Africa.

Today RTC Italy serves WMO Members in Europe and Africa in agrometeorology, climate change and climate services.

Our mission: Connecting people to build knowledge and competencies in weather, water and climate services.

About the presenter: Marina Baldi, coordinator of the RTC Italy since 2014, I'm a climatologist, graduated in physics, working at CNR since 1988, associated scientist at the Institute of BioEconomy. I'm involved in research projects and carry out scientific communication and training activities on climate change and their impacts. Professor of Meteorology and Climatology at the University of Tuscia, Academician of the Georgofili, member of professional associations (AMS, AGU, EGU, EMS), Associate Editor of scientific journals, she served as national delegate to the Climatology Commission (CCl) of the WMO since 2005. Main fields of expertise are climate change and its impact on biosystems, and extreme weather events.

Colleagues and collaborators of the RTC are from CNR-IBE and Universities and Research Centers: Vieri Tarchiani (CNR-IBE), Maurizio Bacci (CNR-IBE), Elena Rapisardi (CNR-IBE), Francesco Sabatini (CNR-IBE), Massimiliano Pasqui (CNR-IBE), Federica Rossi (CNR-IBE), Anna Dalla Marta (DAGRI-Univ of Firenze), Filiberto Altobelli (CREA-Research Centre for Agricultural Policies and Bioeconomy), Teodoro Georgiadis (CNR-IBE)

Main recent training projects

A success story of training in agrometeorology

An Initiative for Angola and Mozambique born from the collaboration between RTC Italy and FAO
A capacity-building training course to transfer the know-how on agrometeorological analysis.

If you are curious to learn more, please, watch the video and listen from the voice of participants (31 min)

Another success story which involved also the RTC Italy will be told during the round table tomorrow afternoon at 15:45 (CET) which will involve the colleague Vieri Tarchiani, on Building competencies and collaboration beyond knowledge and skills: Insights from a transnational partnership

A long lasting collaboration with the AIAM; The International Advanced School in Agricultural Meteorology

The initiative, born from the Italian Association of Agrometeorology (AIAM) was designed and offered by the RTC Italy since 2020 to an international community of joung scientists and professionals from NMHs.

Ideas and suggestions on the design and implementation of the AgroMetSchool next edition, the 6th, of the School are welcome!
