Utilizing the Protégé Effect: A "Training for Trainers" Model for Disaster Mitigation and Climate Change Adaptation (Anggi Dewita & Asri Rachmawati - BMKG)

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) proposes an innovative peer-to-peer “Training for Trainers” initiative aimed at strengthening community resilience. This program involves BMKG staff training 30 selected high school students on natural disaster mitigation and climate change adaptation.

At the core of this project is the pedagogical theory known as the “protégé effect” or “learning by teaching” (Lernen durch Lehren / LdL), which suggests that teaching others deepens understanding and improves knowledge retention. These high school students will then become trainers for elementary school students, adapting the materials to suit a younger audience.

This process not only effectively disseminates essential knowledge but also inherently strengthens the high school students’ understanding, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills. The model creates a sustainable, youth-led community education framework that empowers the younger generation to become agents of change in addressing environmental challenges.
