The Mini-hackathon on the Science Behind Rainbows on Tuesday 14th of November 12:00 UTC

Since we forgot to start the recording at the beginning, Tsvet also has written the ideas that he shared at the start before the video below.

"The EUMETCAL program uses hackathons to create e-learning content much faster than standard approaches. We use a three-phase process based on agile software development called the Successive Approximation Model created by Alan Interactions. The first phase is the preparation phase where we meet with experts in order to discuss the goals of the training event and identify possible content that we may need for our work together. The preparation phase can happen virtually or in person and takes about 2-3 hours.

Next comes the iterative design phase in which we use the content and information that experts have gathered to create a prototype of activities. Then we review them and make adjustments to the design or create new prototypes until we are happy with the direction that we're taking. Usually, this phase happens in person over the course of five days. By the end of the fifth day we have programmed prototypes of many of the activities inside of the e-learning lesson.

During the iterative design phase we usually work together as a team. The team consists of subject matter experts, people with theoretical knowledge and people with practical experience in the content area. They work together with an instructional designer in order to generate text, images and activities, and then prototype the activities of the lesson. The daily schedule is deceptively simple. We meet at the start of each day to see what tasks we would like to accomplish in the morning and then we work on them. After lunch we meet again to review the progress that we made in the morning and identify the tasks that we finished, tasks that still remain or new tasks that we need to complete and then we work on them again. We repeat this for 5 days (36 hours). With this approach, we have been able to program up to half of a lesson by the end of the fifth day of working together. The final task of the in-person phase is to prepare a plan for how we will collaborate in order to complete the project.

The final phase is the iterative development phase, which usually happens virtually. We share programmed versions of the interactions and the entire lesson with learners and experts. We gather their feedback, make adjustments, and after two or three iterations we publish the final version of the lesson."
