What to do if the collaboration model of your collaborative network is not delivering what we all hoped for simply because everyone is far too busy to get their own work within their own institutes done?
During the 2022 EUMETCAL Workshop we have asked the participants what we, as EUMETCAL Programme Management, could do to make sure that this EUMETCAL collaboration is really working for them and that we, together as a community, can make sure that this collaboration is actually going to happen. They suggested to organise a hackathon to jointly develop learning materials for the community.
Here are our adventures during our very first EUMETCAL Hackathon in April 2023.
The event proved to be highly inspiring, productive, and successful, resulting in substantial progress that would not have been possible without this hackathon. The in-person format of the event fostered excellent group dynamics and a friendly atmosphere, generating a tremendous amount of positive energy. This, coupled with the opportunity for participants to concentrate on a specific task within small groups over a relatively short period, facilitated highly efficient creation of learning materials
With a huge thank SMHI, FMI, MetNO, EUMETSAT, MetEireann, KNMI, DWD, DMI, MeteoSwiss, IPMA and M-NAV who have sent their experts to this Hackathon we were able to launch
- The Determine and Communicate Risk Using EPS e-learning
- The Optical Phenomena - Polar stratospheric clouds and noctilucent clouds e-learning
- The Mountain Wave Turbulence for Aviation
Recently we have had two additional smaller hackathons with individual Members. With itAF we have prepared an e-learning and synchronous online training materials on Space Weather and with KNMI we have prepared some Impact Based Forecasting exercises. Currently we are preparing these materials for publication.
You want to experience the hackathon concept yourself? Come to the Mini-hackathon on the Science Behind Rainbows which will take place on Tuesday 14th November at 12:00 UTC. That will help us to finish the Optical Phenomena e-learning we started during the hackathon.
