International Distance Learning Program in

Advanced Topics in Hydraulics, Hydrological Sciences and Hydrometeorology for RA-II

National Water Academy (NWA), Pune;  WMO; and COMET are organizing a International Distance Learning Course in Advanced Topics in Hydraulics, Hydrological Sciences and Hydrometeorology for RA-II for professionals working in hydrological forecasting from Asian Region ( WMO RA II) , from 31 May 2021 to 16 July 2021.

This advanced course is designed to meet the needs of hydrological forecasters who require more advanced training in selected hydraulics and hydrological modeling topics. This course is especially for the participants who have successfully completed the Basic Course or who have requisite knowledge on the subject.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the advantages of using distributed hydrological models, associated data requirements and possible limitations;
  • Define key motivations and purposes of performing forecast verification;
  • Explain techniques for measuring rainfall and processes leading to rainfall, including climate cycles etc.

The course will be centered upon ten required & one (out of four) optional distance learning modules developed by COMET and NWA. Participants will be required to complete an online quiz after the completion of each module.

COMET modules can be accessed/downloaded directly from the COMET website. However it is strongly advised that the COMET modules may be accessed using the links given on this course website so as to ensure that you always access the correct version of the module. All modules are written in presentable form and in a manner to keep the reader engaged until he/she reaches the end. Similarly, quizzes for all modules are also constructed to test the knowledge gain of the reader.

The course will also include two live webinars at the start and close of the course to be attended by participants . Considering that in some places there can be constraint of band-width, these events are optional.

Daily online communications between course instructors and fellow participants is also possible through 'Course Forum'. Both live sessions as well as online communications will allow participants to ask questions, share their views, issues and experiences, and learn more deeply by discussing the course content with their peers and the instructors. We urge the participants to interact with us as often as they feel necessary.

In addition to completing the given modules & quizzes, each participant will be required to complete a short final assignment. Upon successful completion of the assignments and the online quizzes for each module will earn participants a certificate of completion jointly issued by NWA, WMO, and COMET.

It is estimated that the dedication needed to successfully complete this course is a total of about 48-56 hours, or an average of about 8 hours/week.
