What is the most urgent training need within our CALMet community that could be jointly addressed by a hackathon?

Today at 12 UTC during the Mini-hackathon on the Science Behind Rainbows we have shared an experience with a group that found how inspiring, powerful, productive, and successful a hackathon to develop (e-)learning materials can be. It is a kind of cookpot that works in a very effective way.

Now we have provided you with all this information we also have a question to you; What is the most urgent training need within our CALMet community that could be jointly addressed by such a hackathon? The basic condition is that either you or a colleague, as trainer and/or subject matter expert, should be allowed and willing to dedicate time into this effort.

Hope to hear from you!

Hartelijke groet, heleen

Hi Heleen,

I am contributing to the planning of the next joint WMO/IMO Symposium to be held next year, and training will be a major topic. (I hope Nuno is reading this.) One of the recognized great needs is better understanding of the impacts of severe weather on mariners at sea, and reciprocally, the capabilities and limitations of providing weather information. Good case studies that demonstrate the impacts and decision making required during severe weather events at sea, and at the same time show the challenges of forecasting in ocean environments, are in need. Another way to put it is, Impacts-based Forecasting for Marine Forecasters (in this case focusing on larger ship mariners). If anything like this exists, I hope to learn about it soon. If not, let's have a discussion about who would benefit enough from this need to contribute.

Hello Patrick,

I've recently taken on a new role as a met trainer for UK Navy personnel after 30 years in met research and teaching at the University of East Anglia. Your focus on developing training resources for mariners is naturally very interesting for us and I'd like to help you in this endeavour!

I enjoyed the rainbow hackathon yesterday which Heleen mentioned and can see the power of this approach.

Hi Stephen,

Very nice to meet you, and thanks for letting me know about your interest in such an endeavor. It seems there could be several in the group that are potentially interested.

This idea is in the very early stages, but the need is recognized as urgent. Sorry I did not make it to the hackathon event, but I have some ideas about the approach based on its use in various arenas over the years. I will look into it more, but I can see concept being useful in a variety of ways, even if it is not to reach a finished product or prototype.

The key thing for the people interested in promoting training development at the symposium will be to do it in collaboration with IMO--so it would be a very user-centered design approach with users not only on the team, but seeing the project result as cross-training, with contributors representing both learners and experts at the same time. It could be a fascinating effort to create case-based learning that could be useful from multiple points of view. I suspect such things have been done in the DRR arena.

Let's keep in touch and see who else can be drawn into this. Are you suggesting that your organization would likely be interested in the investment of your time to contribute to such a project?

@Steve; Thank you very much for your offer! won't forget that one ;-)

@Patrick; I am not sure whether I understand what you are trying to say with "The key thing" paragraph. But seen our experiences in the hackathons is that you will get the best output (learing materials) in the most efficient way if you put trainers, subject matter experts (and if possible one or two learners) on in this case marine meteorology facilitated by an experience instructional designer in the same room to develop interactive training material for a week. that can be case studies, excersises, modules to activily pick up their knowlegde again,....
really a very intense process but very worthwhile.

Lets keep in touch! and I might be able to find a KNMI person to join too

Hi Heleen,

Its not surprising that my convoluted paragraph was hard to decipher. There is still a lot to learn about what expectations will be, and whether learning resources are even what is desired. I will be proposing that, though, so that there is broader reach. Let's do keep in touch.

There may be room in the agenda for a speaker on marine training needs, and I was thinking that if a person could be found that knows the IMO and could represent EUMETNET/EUMETCAL, it could be a nice starting point.

The Symposium is not until next year, 3rd quarter.
