Using Satellite Data for Winter Weather Decision-Making

Description

In this e-learning module, learners use satellite products, NWP guidance, and other meteorological observations to build and continuously refine a three-dimensional understanding of the atmosphere. They identify synoptic- and mesoscale features and processes, recognize conditions and satellite signatures associated with polar-low development, and assess how these processes interact. Using incoming observations and forecast guidance, learners evaluate the development and trajectory of a possible polar low and anticipate its impact on airports in Norway throughout its life cycle. They continuously compare expected and observed conditions, updating their mental model and amending forecasts as new information becomes available. Learners also practice translating their meteorological assessment into operational decision-support information and determining when warnings may be required.
