Electrical Phenomena

Description

Description

This online learning module covers the Earth's global electrical circuit and various electrical phenomena associated with it.

It explains the physical concepts behind lightning and other electrical phenomena, and lets the learner experience the meteorological conditions under which these phenomena can occur.

It can be combined with a series of online learning modules on optical phenomena, which will be made available once they are fully developed and ready for use.

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the concept of Earth’s global electrical circuit.
  • Describe the mechanisms that cause electrical phenomena.
  • Explain the following electrical phenomena: Lightning, Aircraft Induced Lightning, Blue Jet, Elf, Sprite and St. Elm’s Fire
  • Decide whether these electrical phenomena may occur or not in specific synoptic and mesoscale situations.
  • Distinguish between these different electrical phenomena.

Target Audience

Forecasters, weather observers and all others who want to learn more about the Earth’s global electrical circuit and different electrical phenomena.
