Topic outline

  • Oman 13-17 April 2025

    • The WIS 2.0 Training Workshop, scheduled for 13-17 April 2025 in Muscat, Oman, is a comprehensive event designed to enhance understanding and operational skills related to the WIS 2.0 system. Hosted at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Training Centre, the workshop will be conducted in English, with Arabic support available for Q&A sessions.

    • To ensure the smooth delivery of the training content participants are asked to bring a laptop that has an SSH-client and MQTT-explorer pre-installed.

    • The first day of the WIS 2.0 Training Workshop will begin with a focus on understanding the national observation networks and IT infrastructure of the participating countries. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of the current capabilities and facilities available in the participants countries, helping to assess their infrastructure and identify any potential areas for improvement or support.

Following this, the workshop will introduce WIS 2.0, providing a foundational understanding of its architecture, key concepts, and the role of its components. Participants will learn about the core components of WIS 2.0, including the  Global Cache, Global Broker, Global Discovery Catalogue, and the protocols that support data sharing, such as MQTT. The session will also outline the implementation plan for WIS 2.0, providing insights into the practical steps for deploying and integrating the system within national frameworks. By the end of the day, participants will have a solid understanding of how WIS 2.0 works, its architecture, and the crucial role each component plays in facilitating efficient data exchange and global collaboration.

    • The day will begin with a comprehensive introduction to "WIS2 in a Box", covering its core features, functionality, and how it fits into WIS 2.0. Following this, participants will engage in hands-on practical sessions, where they will learn how to initialize the system on their VM, configure datasets, and manage station metadata.

In the afternoon, the focus will shift to ingesting and publishing data using WIS2Box. Through guided practical exercises, participants will explore how to upload and share data efficiently within the WIS2 system. By the end of the day, attendees will have a thorough understanding of how to manage data flows in WIS2 and will be able to execute these tasks independently.

    • On the third day, participants will delve into advanced functionalities of wis2box, focusing on data conversion, GTS integration, and access control. The day begins with hands-on sessions on using tools like ecCodes and CSV-to-BUFR conversion to standardize meteorological data formats. Attendees will learn to create custom BUFR mapping templates for seamless data interoperability.

The afternoon sessions cover WIS2-to-GTS transition, including adding GTS headers for legacy system compatibility and configuring access-controlled datasets to enable the sharing of recommended data with selected partners using authorization-tokens.

    • On the fourth day, participants will transition from technical operations to strategic implementation, focusing on deploying a WIS2 Node and becoming active data consumers within the WIS 2.0.

The morning sessions cover Node implementation fundamentals, including networking, security, maintenance, and the registration process with WMO’s global infrastructure. Attendees will then explore data discovery and subscription workflows, learning how to find, access, and download datasets as end-users.

In the afternoon, the focus shifts to planning: participants will draft their own WIS2 implementation plans with guidance from experts, preparing for Friday’s discussions. This day bridges theory and practice, equipping teams to operationalize WIS 2.0 in their national contexts.

    • The final day of the workshop is dedicated to collaborative knowledge-sharing and strategic alignment. Participants will present their draft WIS2 implementation plans in a roundtable format, discussing challenges, solutions, and timelines for deploying WIS 2.0 in their respective countries.

The session fosters peer learning, with feedback from WMO experts and facilitators. The workshop concludes with a Closing Ceremony, summarizing key achievements and next steps to operationalize WIS 2.0 globally.
