The first day of the WIS 2.0 Training Workshop will begin with a focus on understanding the national observation networks and IT infrastructure of the participating countries. This first part serves to provide a comprehensive overview of the current capabilities and facilities available in the participants countries.
The first day will introduce WIS 2.0, providing a foundational understanding of its architecture, key concepts, and the role of its components. Participants will learn about the core components of WIS 2.0, including the Global Cache, Global Broker, Global Discovery Catalogue, and the protocols that support data sharing.
The session will also outline the implementation plan for WIS 2.0, providing insights into the practical steps for deploying and integrating the system within national frameworks and the provisions for the transition from GTS/WIS1 to WIS 2.0.
Finally, GISC Beijing will showcase the WIS 2.0 Global Services they operate. -
Day 2 demonstrates the principles of sharing data on WIS 2.0 by using the wis2box-software on locally provided Virtual Machines to enable each participant to setup their own WIS2 Node.
At the end of the day we will visit the Guangdong Meteorological Service followed by a social event in downtown Guangzhou
Presentations explaining how the wis2box-software works are combined with
hands-on practical sessions, where participants will learn how to initialize the system on their VM, configure datasets, and finally ingest and publishing data from their own WIS2 Node. -
On the third day, participants will learn about WMO Binary Codes and data conversion tools included in the wis2box-software. The day begins with hands-on sessions on using tools like ecCodes and CSV-to-BUFR conversion to standardize meteorological data formats.
The afternoon sessions cover WIS2-to-GTS transition, including adding GTS headers for the transition period and configuring access-controlled datasets to limit the sharing of recommended data with selected partners using authorization-tokens.
-
The fourth day will focusing on how to consume data on WIS2, how to setup a WIS2 Node and how GISC Beijing supports WIS2 Operations.
The morning sessions cover explore data discovery and subscription workflows, learning how to find, access, and download datasets as end-users. Following this we will look at WIS2 Node implementation fundamentals, including networking, security, maintenance, and the registration process with WMO’s global infrastructure.
In the afternoon, the focus shifts to planning: participants will draft their own WIS2 implementation plans with guidance from experts, preparing for Friday’s discussions. This day bridges theory and practice, equipping teams to operationalize WIS 2.0 in their national contexts.
-
On the final day of the this workshop participants present their draft WIS2 implementation plans in a roundtable format, discussing challenges, solutions, and timelines for deploying WIS 2.0 in their respective countries.
Participants with receive a physical certificate attesting their attendance of the WIS2 Training Workshop after the round-table session.
In the afternoon CMA will present an overview of the CMACast system as well as several applications of the integrated CMACast system.
