Description:  This first session of the 2025 CONECT Webinar Series provides an overview of the revised Basic Instruction Packages for Meteorologists (BIP-M) and Meteorological Technicians (BIP-MT), adopted by the 19th World Meteorological Congress in 2023. The presenters will explore the motivations for the review, outline the revision process, and highlight the most significant changes aimed at aligning education and training standards with evolving professional needs and modern teaching practices.

About the Presenters: 

Dr Winifred Jordaan 

Dr Winifred Jordaan served as the Director of the WMO Regional Training Centre in Pretoria, South Africa, for over 20 years. A co-chair of the BIP revision process completed in 2023, she has been deeply involved in the development of curricula for both meteorologists and meteorological technicians. Dr Jordaan currently serves as Chair of the CONECT Management Group and is a member of the WMO Capacity Development Panel. 

 

Ms Colleen N. Rae  

Colleen Rae was the Qualification Manager for Meteorological Technicians at the South African Weather Service from 2000 until her retirement in 2022. Her career has spanned meteorological observations, forecasting, and training. She contributed to the WMO Task Team that revised the International Cloud Atlas and served as the Team Lead for updating the Basic Instruction Package for Meteorological Technicians. 

 

Dr Mick Pope 

Dr Mick Pope is the Manager of the Graduate Meteorologist Program at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, where he has worked for over 25 years. He contributed to the 2023 revision of the BIP-M. Dr Pope serves on the CALMet Working Group and is Co-Vice Chair of the CONECT Management Group, where he also leads the working group focused on promoting the sharing of training resources under the WMO Global Campus initiative.
