Looking to enrich the technical profile of those who carry out, or will carry out, the meteorological data acquisition in the observation field, trainers and courses makers, offer by the Argentinian Meteorological Service for Region III and IV (latinoamerican countries), have been adapting and expanding the material about new techniques and  for meteorological parameters measurement.

The truth is that measurement systems along the region are in a process of change, and still conformed by a conventional system, mostly operated manually with scarce points of measurement often aimed to cover just the aeronautical needs.

Some challenged aspect show up for those who are involved on meteorological observation courses:

  • Resources availability

  • Observational network state and integrity

  • Reliable Internet connectivity

  • Technology accessibility

  • Previous technical knowledge

  • Immediate NMHSs needs

  • Students profile heterogeneity

  • Rooting to old practices and techniques

  • Resistance to new technologies.

At this moment, is taking place the Meteorological Observation Course with more than 200 students from all Latinoamerica, where we were collecting experiences and comments from students and trainers as well, and observe their obstacles and doubts about automatic instruments.

In this context, students and trainers count with limited or none resources or instrumentation at all in order to get closer to new technologies.

On the other hand, NMHSs seek to solve the lack of personnel to operate the traditional instruments while there is a rooting to these traditional practices and operators don´t feel comfortable using automatic systems or measuring other than conventional variables.

We would like to propose a discussion here about how to face these issues, our experience as trainers and how we should motivate future operators, people currently working in meteorological stations and decision takers.
