COMET/MetEd: Wind and Wave Forecasting Distance Learning Course

This course is composed of five core topic elements. It begins with a Webcast introducing forecasters to typical marine forecast customers and their wind and wave concerns. 7-9 hours of course material. The individual core lessons within this course are:

COMET/MetEd: Understanding Marine Customers, 2nd Edition

Understanding Marine Customers, 2nd edition, introduces the different marine forecast customers and discusses what forecast information they need to know and why they need to know it. A better understanding of the needs of the marine forecast customer will lead to better daily forecasts. The 2nd edition expands upon marine customer base to include more nearshore users, such as beachgoers, surfers, and sea kayakers.

While the material and interviews relate to US NOAA/NWS situations, the basic concepts are transferrable to more nations.

Marine Weather Services Incident Response and Decision Support

Marine Weather Services Incident Response and Decision Support provides guidance for forecasters tasked with supporting oil or chemical spills and other marine-focused incidents. The lesson follows an example spill event to help demonstrate marine forecasters' responsibilities for coordinating with emergency managers, other NOAA line offices, and governmental agencies and outlines best practices related to effective communication.

While the material and interviews relate to US NOAA/NWS situations, the basic concepts are transferrable to more nations.

EUMETrain Marine Course 2019

This course addresses the following WMO Marine Forecaster Competencies:

(i) Forecast Marine Weather phenomena, variables and parameters
(ii) Warn of Hazardous Phenomena

COMET/MetEd: Using Multi-hazard, Impacts-based Forecast and Warning Services

Using a heavy rain situation in Barbados, this video demonstrates the use of Multi-hazard, Impacts-based Forecast and Warning Services. The demonstration will show an evolution of the forecast in the 3-, 2-, and 1-day lead time periods. The rainfall case is based loosely on 2018's Tropical Storm Kirk, although the name and specific details of the storm are not used.

WMO/ETR: CAP Courses

These courses and resources are designed to enhance your understanding of CAP: what it does, how it works, how to issue CAP alerts, and how to manage and set up CAP for your organization. The material is offered as three separate courses to be taken based on your role and responsibilities in administering and maintaining CAP alert systems. In addition to the courses, a collection of IT resources provides guidance for installing and maintaining CAP Alert software.

IOC-WMO-UNEP-ISC Global Ocean Observing System

The IOC-WMO-UNEP-ISC Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) offers online courses and resources to raise awareness and to implement Ocean Monitoring systems and forecasts.
