GBON requirements

Dear colleagues,

At present, we have the capacity, as GBON stations, to report the parameters SLP, T, H, W, P, and SD on an hourly basis, as required.
However, I have a question regarding precipitation data.

When we report data every 3 hours, precipitation is transmitted twice per day: at 03 UTC — the total for the previous 12 hours ,  and 15 UTC — the total for the previous 24 hours.

Could you clarify how precipitation should be reported in the case of hourly data transmission?

Thank you in advance.

Dear Gohar, thank you for rising these interesting and important quesitons.

In case of hourly trasmision you could add the precipitation for different periods as well. The bufr reports allow you to specify

Your can have 1 hour accumalated preciptation period which responds to GBON requierementes and you can have 12, 24 hour periods that respond to other requirements. And these other periods can be publish every hour or on selected times as you put in the example.

In RAIII, for example, we advocate for this minimum when hourly data is available.
- 1hr precip
- 6hr precip at 0,6,12,18 utc
- 24h precip at 12utc

And some members are providing all these periods in the hourly reports, and others on the selected times.

In your region you might have other agreements regarding this data. But at first glance I would recommend to add the 3utc (12hour accumulated precip) and 15utc (24hr accumulated precip) on your GBON reports. I believe is important to have a continuity in the observasions and homegeinity wtithin different local networks.

I hope this helps

Best regards

Martina
